Bostadsbyggande är ny-, om- och tillbyggnad av bostäder. I statistiken och i prognoser presenteras ofta bostadsbyggandet som antalet lägenheter producerade per år.
Tidigare har bostadsbyggandet betraktats som en central beståndsdel av det svenska välfärdssamhället och staten har ansetts ha en viktig uppgift i att övervaka hur bostadsproduktionen sker. Nu är dock den svenska statens roll inom denna sektor reducerad. Ansvaret för bostadsproduktionen har allt mer lagts på de olika aktörerna inom byggprocessen.

english definition:

Housing construction is the construction of new dwellings, the rebuilding of dwellings or the construction of additions to dwellings. Statistics and prognoses often present housing construction as the number of flats (dwellings) produced annually.
Previously housing construction has been considered as a central constituent of the Swedish welfare society and the state has been considered to have an important task in the supervision of housing construction. Nowadays the role of the Swedish state in this sector is diminished. The responsibility for the housing production has increasingly been placed on the different actors in the building process.
