De areella näringarna omfattar: jordbruk, skogsbruk, rennäring, yrkesfiske samt vattenbruk.
I miljöbalken finns grundläggande bestämmelser för hushållning med mark- och vattenområden. Där finns bland annat bestämmelser rörande de areella näringarna. Vid till exempel planläggning och i ärenden om bygglov och förhandsbesked skall hänsyn till dessa bestämmelser tas. Hänsyn till de areella näringarna skall även tas vid prövning av ärende enligt övrig miljöbalksanknuten lagstiftning.

Land-based industry includes: agriculture, forestry, reindeer husbandry, commercial fisheries and aquaculture.
The Environmental Code includes basic rules for the management of land and water areas. It includes, among other things, rules on the land-based industries. In planning and matters of building permits and advance notifications, these rules need to be taken into consideration. The land-based industry also has be considered when examining matters according to other laws connected to the Environmental Code.
