В настоящее время (2006) в России градостроительное проектирование регулируется сотнями федеральных нормативных документов санитарных, строительных, пожарных, как и норм регионального и муниципального уровней. С 2010 г планируется ввести федеральные технические регламенты, обеспечивающие безопасность, регионам и муниципалитетам дано право принимать свои нормативы градостроительного проектирования рассчитанные на благоприятные условия жизнедеятельности (доступность и параметры общественных инфраструктур, плотности и пр.).
