Zinātnes iestāde ir zemes, ēkas vai tās daļas izmantošana zinātniskās pētniecības vai līdzīga rakstura iestādei. Zinātniskās institūcijas ir zinātniskie institūti, augstskolas, komercsabiedrības, kā arī citas institūcijas, kuru statūtos, nolikumā vai satversmē ir paredzēta zinātniskā darbība, piedalīšanās zinātniskās kvalifikācijas iegūšanas un pilnveidošanas procesā un kuras ir reģistrētas zinātnisko institūciju reģistrā. Zinātniskajā institūcijā jābūt vismaz piecām personām ar doktora zinātnisko grādu institūcijas darbībai atbilstošajā pētījumu virzienā.

Science institution is the utilization of land, structure or part thereof to provide scientific research or similar institution. Scientific institutions are research institutes, institutions of higher education, commercial companies, as well as other institutions in the articles of association, by-law or constitution of which scientific activity and participation in the process of acquiring and improving scientific qualification is provided for and which are registered in the register of scientific institutions. A scientific institution shall have at least five persons with a doctoral degree in science in a direction of research that conforms to the activities of the scientific institution.
