Ainavu identifikācija jeb noteikšana un novērtēšana nozīmē, ar mērķi uzlabot zināšanas par valsts teritorijā esošajām ainavām, identificēt (noteikt) ainavas visā tās teritorijā; analizēt to īpašības, un spēkus un ietekmes, kas tās pārveido; dokumentēt un ņemt vērā izmaiņas; un novērtēt šādi identificētās ainavas, ņemot vērā to īpašās vērtības, kuras ieinteresētās puses un iedzīvotāji tām ir piešķīruši. Landscape identification and assessment means, with a view to improving knowledge of its landscapes, to identify nations own landscapes throughout their territory, to analyse their characteristics and the forces and pressures transforming them, to take note of changes, to assess the landscapes thus identified, taking into account the particular values assigned to them by the interested parties and the population concerned.
