Søterritoriet er delvis beskyttet af kystnærhedszonen. Bortset fra trafikhavneanlæg og andre overordnede infrastrukturanlæg kan der kun i ganske særlige tilfælde planlægges for bebyggelse og anlæg på land, som forudsætter inddragelse af arealer på søterritoriet.

The territorial waters are partly protected by the coastal zone regulation. Except for harbour facilities used for transport and other very important infrastructural installations, development projects on land that require the reclamation of areas in the territorial waters or special coastal protection may only be planned in very special circumstances.
