Regler om landsplanlægning blev indført i 1974. En samlet landsplan udarbejdes ikke. Landsplanlægningen kommer til udtryk gennem redegørelser, eksempelvis landsplanredegørelse og natur- og miljøpolitisk redegørelse, bindende retningslinier, vejledninger og indgriben i den lokale planlægning for emner og projekter som har national interesse gennem landsplandirektiver. I landsplanlægningen tegnes en vision for udviklingen af hele landet som afspejler de politiske målsætninger. En ramme som de regionale og kommunale planlægningsmyndigheder skal forholde sig til i den regionale udviklingsplanlægning og i kommuneplanlægningen.

The rules on national planning were introduced in 1974. A proper, overall national plan is not produced. National planning is expressed through reports (such as national planning reports and reports on nature and environmental policy), binding instructions, guidelines and intervention in municipal and local planning through national planning directives for themes and projects of national interest. National planning shapes a vision for the development of the whole country that reflects national political objectives. The regional authorities and municipal planning authorities must consider this framework in preparing the regional spatial development plan and in carrying out municipal planning.
