Det er et af den fysiske planlægning i Danmarks hovedformål at forene de samfundsmæssige interesser i arealanvendelsen, hvorfor planlægningen kan regulere stort set alle former for arealanvendelse, herunder areal til boligformål, erhvervsformål, infrastruktur, butiks- og serviceformål, tekniske anlæg og friarealer. Der kan optages bindende bestemmelser om arealanvendelsen i kommuneplanens rammedel og i lokalplaner.

One of the major priorities in Denmark’s spatial planning is to integrate societal interests into land use. Hence, spatial planning can regulate practically all sorts of land use, including land use for housing, commercial use, infrastructure, shops and services, technical installations and open spaces. Municipal councils may adopt provisions governing land use in the municipal plan and local plans.
